Artist Profile: LEE McKENNA
Altered Landscape ‘Pink’
1) Who are you?
Lee McKenna
2) A brief creative background/ how you came into working with collage.
My background is in education and later graphic design. Both of these influenced my road to making art by hand.
3) Why collage?
I have a mad love of the raw materials. Paper - from all sources, of all variations in whatever origin/state/age. And collage is so versatile... it can be minimal or sculptural!
4) Describe your practice/ workspace (ie: messy, sorted cut outs, rituals, methods of working etc)
I like order and knowing that the materials I want are at my fingertips when needed. I have a small pile of precut images but generally I cut as needed - preferring to have similar themed images stored together in an uncut state. And though I love order, I often end up in a chaotic paper mess.
3) How has your practice evolved?
Years ago, collage used to be a small added element on the paintings I was making at the time... it wasn’t long before collaging took over.
4) Where to next?
The challenge is to continue to find fresh ways to use the medium of collage in this fast paced, visually saturated environment.
